A college closed in Marseille, the boarding school of a high school evacuated in Lorient… Bedbugs have climbed to the top of the French people’s concerns, bringing their share of reports every day. This Tuesday, they broke into the Purpan University Hospital, via a post on X (ex-Twitter) from the LFI deputy for Toulouse François Piquemal.

“He’s an acquaintance whose son was hospitalized yesterday [lundi] at the Purpan hospital which sent me the videos, explains the parliamentarian to 20 Minutes. The problem is not the CHU, with which I am not seeking to argue. He too finds himself with this problem which can have serious consequences on people’s health and from which we are not likely to escape if measures are not taken. » It was Ramissa, a community activist from working-class neighborhoods, who relayed photos and videos to the MP. “My 25-year-old son had an accident and was admitted to an emergency room in Purpan. He saw the bedbugs, filmed them and as he had a wound on his head, the presence of these animals really bothered him, he slept very badly,” says the mother, rather upset. She says she made a report to reception this Tuesday morning and produced other videos, where a bedbug is crawling on the walls.

“These are situations that can happen”

The management of the Toulouse University Hospital indicates that it does not have, at this stage, any precise feedback on the case of Ramissa and her son. But it does not exclude the occasional presence of bedbugs in the establishment. “These are situations that can obviously occur, due to the nature of our activities,” she explains. When the link is made, hygiene teams and professionals are called upon for total disinfection of the area concerned. »

This Toulouse illustration comes at the right time for François Piquemal who, this Tuesday morning, presented “a proposed resolution” to the National Assembly with the other LFI deputies. The text recalls that the political group had already raised the alarm in 2019 and requests the adoption of “an emergency plan for the prevention and fight once morest bedbugs” as well as the creation of a “public service of disinsection”. “We are asking that bedbugs be recognized as a public health problem, with for example the creation of an emergency aid fund for the most vulnerable who are forced to part with their furniture,” specifies the Toulouse MP.
