The rapid progress made in the field of artificial intelligence, and especially its lack of regulation, worries an expert in the field who warns of all the uncertainty around this technology.
The founder and scientific director of the Quebec Institute of Artificial Intelligence fears in particular that AI might create biological weapons, once it can act through robots.
“Imagine a pandemic to the power of 10 with viruses that have been created by artificial intelligence to be very virulent and contagious, it might bring humanity to the ground,” illustrated Yoshua Bengio in an interview with LCN on Thursday.
According to him, there are not yet enough rules to contain artificial intelligence that might turn once morest humans in the future.
“There is a lot of uncertainty, researchers disagree on possible scenarios. Given the extent of the possible damage, we must take care of it and ensure that we do not go that far,” he maintained.

To better understand his fears, he compared the training of artificial intelligence to that of an animal that we try to educate by giving it rewards.
“If it is an animal more powerful than you [que vous entraînez] like a grizzly bear, you want to be sure that things are going to go well,” explained Mr. Bengio.
“The companies try to put in protection, we can see it like the grizzly bear’s cage, but today we don’t know how to build a cage that is really safe,” he added.
He hopes for better international cooperation and research funding to prevent such a disastrous future.
