This nurse decided to adopt Gisele following the latter spent five months without receiving any visitors at the hospital, as relayed by our colleagues at the Washington Post.
A look, then an adoption decision
One day, while Liz was walking to the elevator at work, she saw an infant with beautiful bright blue eyes. Smith asked the nurse holding the baby, “Who is this beautiful angel?” The nurse told her that the baby’s name was Gisèle. A ward of the state, this baby had been in the hospital for five months, but Liz had never seen it before.
Liz later learns that Gisèle, aged 8 months, was born premature in another hospital, weighing just under 907 grams. The little one suffered from neonatal abstinence syndrome, consequence of his biological mother’s use of heroin, cocaine and methadone during pregnancy.
Social services, however, tried to place her in foster care. But when Liz saw her, she immediately felt that she wanted to be the mother of this baby.
A desire for motherhood
Liz lost her mother at the age of 19 to liver cancer. She decided to pay tribute to her mother, a selfless nurse, by leading a healthy lifestyle and following his example.
Liz remained single and then dedicated herself to being the best aunt to her 13 nieces and nephews. Liz’s sister Elly said she always imagined Liz as a mother, because she is a nurturing mother by nature.
Liz says that ever since she met the baby, his blue eyes have captured her attention. She said she felt the need to love this child and keep him safe.
After applying to foster Gisele, Liz began visiting the baby’s hospital room every day following work to sit by his cradle and speak to him in a gentle voice.
Liz received permission to take the baby with her when Gisele was nine months old, with the condition that the state continue its efforts to reunite the baby with her biological parents. And although they initially received weekly supervised visits, the state determined that they were incapable of caring for the infant and their parental rights were terminated.
What is neonatal abstinence syndrome?
When the mother uses drugs during pregnancy, these substances pass through the placenta to reach the fetus. This is what causes chemical dependency in the baby. After birth, the baby is no longer exposed to these substances and may exhibit withdrawal symptoms such as:
Sleep problems Faster breathing rate Excessive crying Tremors.
