It was long past midnight on Friday. Mirtha Legrand does not seem tired. She confesses that she got up early and traveled by car to Rosario to receive a distinction in honor of her career. She apologizes for not going up the stairs that lead her to the stage because she is too steep. “I have a bad knee”, she excuses herself first and then she admits that it’s not for that reason. “It’s a lie, I can’t go upstairs,” she says following walking safely and accompanied the meters that separate the main table and the center of the room from which she is going to speak as if at a meeting of friends.
Standing in front of a microphone, she receives the applause of hundreds of people who do not stop filming her. Governor Omar Perotti hesitates to accompany her on her short walk to the speech, but she stands beside her; the mayor of the city, Pablo Javkin, greets her with a smile and applauds. She is going to repay him by telling him that she did a good job and that she won the elections well. She also asks for a round of applause for him. The president of the Council, María Eugenia Schmuck, proudly shows her that she managed to get all the councilors to vote for her to be an illustrious visitor to the city. The mayor’s rival in the next elections, Juan Monteverde, decides to participate in the scene and is too high, but appears on camera in his first foray into this traditional Rosario production awards ceremony.
Mirtha rushes to tell the story of her life, flirting with the idea that most people already know her. Carelessly, she notices that she isn’t in a hurry tonight because she doesn’t have to record her television show over the weekend, the one she did for so many years and that now isn’t on the air. It is a subtle reproach, and she does not hesitate to affirm that she is convinced that the best thing for her life is to continue working, even though she cannot do it now.
“This year I haven’t worked yet, we’ll see what happens. The channels are difficult, ”she launches, in a sentence that contains his desire and the hope of continuing to make his tables on television that set a record for permanence and are listed in Guinness. There is also a slight reproach to the channels of the Federal Capital that do not accept their conditions or who knows what.
Among the audience that listens to it are the directors of the two Rosario air channels, Televisión Litoral (Canal3), belonging to Channel 13, and Telefé Rosario. But the claim of the lunch diva is not directed at them. She was surely thinking regarding the long negotiations of her grandson Nacho Viale with Adrián Suar.

Mirtha is already the honorary president of the Fernández Hospital and reveals that every day people call her who cannot be attended by doctors or who cannot be operated on. “I deal with it and it gives me pleasure,” she admits. And she explains the reasons: “I want my whole life not to be in vain, just to have been famous, to be successful. I want to do something for my compatriots, ”she enthuses.
It nuances with his personal history to decompress. “My career was miraculous, I always tell it, I hope I don’t bore you. I started at the age of 14, I made my first film called Los martes orquídeas. On Monday at the Malba they are going to pay homage to Argentina Sono Films’ birthday and they are going to show a film of mine, La patota, directed by Daniel Tinayre”.
He says goodbye with applause. “I have never stopped working. When I say that I owe my life to the public, it’s true. I don’t know how many more years I will live, but I owe them my whole life, because I always wanted to be an actress. When she was a girl, she had a babysitter named Bruna and she told her to make my bow really big, because she wanted them to look at me, she wanted to distinguish me in something. My twin sister was different.”
He tells details of how he prepared for the evening that is regarding to end. “I come to Rosario and I am transformed. I’m dressed like this because I’ve been trying on clothes for two days to see what I can wear. I try on Elvira, who is my assistant, and I ask her if it looks good on me. I was going to come in black, but I said no, I’m sure many ladies are going to come in black, so I’m going to wear color instead. My hairdresser came early, I showered, I washed my hair early this morning to have my hair clean, nice. My makeup artist came, we came in three hours, a wonderful trip and I am in Rosario that I adore it, that she was always close, ”she added, as in the song by Fito Páez.
She asks if what she says is too long, but with her there are no metrics or limitations. “I read an article that said that Rosario has magic. You don’t realize it because you’re from Rosario, but Rosario has something that catches you and you don’t want to leave here. I lived several years because my mom was a teacher. She taught at a school in Saladillo. I was very happy, we went to the María Auxiliadora school. I always do the tour. And then we lived on Mendoza and Sarmiento streets, opposite Sala Lavardén, and on Necochea 1717. I remember everything. Every time I come to Rosario I take a walk because I love her ”, she repeats and asks for a round of applause for Lionel Messi, “a man from Rosario who is everyone’s pride ”.
He finishes talking and the end of the party arrives. But Mirtha is not in a hurry, she enjoys the moment. “From now on I am going to collect the photos, she -she jokes- and the proceeds I am going to donate to a hospital. I must have taken at least two hundred photos tonight, but I love it. Imagine if no one took my note. I am 96 years old dear, and I am here. And now I’m not going to sleep, I’m going to drive around Rosario in the car. Those who want to take a photo can come closer. I’m going to be eating my little dessert.”
