A 25-year-old California mother was arrested and charged with attempted murder and child abuse Friday following a newborn was found abandoned in a trash can outside Los Angeles.

Vanissa Maldonado was taken into custody following the “tragic call for service” Thursday followingnoon along W. Orangethorpe Ave., the Fullerton Police Department said.

“Maldonado is the mother of the child,” a Fullerton Police Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital. The reason for the incident is unknown, he added.

“Once officers arrived on scene, they located a newborn inside a trash can that was inside the bathroom,” the Fullerton Police Department said. “Officers immediately began taking action to save his life.”

The Fullerton Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported the newborn to a local hospital for further medical attention. The boy was described by police on Thursday as being in “critical but stable condition.”

Investigators said they tracked down Maldonado following reviewing surveillance footage and vehicle information. As of now, the incident remains under investigation.

“Just another reminder that the Safe Surrender of Babies Act became permanent state law in January of 2006,” Fullerton police said. “The intent of the law is to save the lives of newborns at risk of abandonment by encouraging the parents or person with legal custody to give up the baby safely within 72 hours of birth, no questions asked,” they said.

In other developments, a Texas woman accused of abandoning her two young children for weeks in Houston was arrested in southern Alabama on Wednesday.

Yates told Desselle that she “hired a nanny for the children while she was away and that she had to take care of their father, who was dying.”

The woman also claimed that her 12-year-old daughter had access to “thousands of dollars to make and buy anything.”

Roman Forest police said Yates is charged with two counts of abandonment and endangerment of a minor without intent to return.

As of now, he is in the custody of the Mobile Police Department pending extradition to Montgomery County, Texas. The two children are safe with a relative in Alabama.
