Voice chats are appearing on WhatsApp. Less restrictive than group calls, the functionality will be available on conversations with multiple participants. On iOS, as on Android.

WhatsApp begins large-scale deployment of voice chats. According to WABetaInfo, the functionality, tested since August 2023, is arriving soon on our iOS and Android smartphones. As long as users have made the latest updates.

As a reminder, voice chats were originally supposed to be an overhaul of WhatsApp’s calling system. One thing led to another and the project became a full-fledged feature that complements voice calls. Because that’s what it’s all regarding: overcoming the faults of others.

How it works ?

Until now, if you wanted to chat in person with several members of your conversation, you had no choice but to make a call. However, the system remains limited. Simply because a voice call invites all participants to join the call and emphasizes the phones in the conversation.

The main advantage of voice chats actually lies in its discretion. In fact, the functionality allows you to launch a call without ringing the participants’ smartphones. Instead, group members receive a silent notification to alert them that a voice chat is in progress.

Each user can therefore decide whether or not to join the conversation. Furthermore, it is also possible to see which group members are participating in the call. Whether from the voice wave icon present in the conversation or from the “Calls” tab. And if the chat remains inactive for more than 60 minutes, it automatically deactivates.

Obviously, all voice chats benefit from end-to-end encryption. No question for WhatsApp to compromise on confidentiality. There remains a small singularity which makes you smile, since the functionality is only available for conversations with more than 32 people. And this, while the cat can accommodate… 32 people.
