THE ESSENTIAL

- A total of 10 deaths have been recorded worldwide since May.
Not a week goes by without new symptoms of monkeypox being identified by scientists. While the epidemic of monkeypox progress in Europe, clinicians in Bergamo, Italy have discovered a new symptom that affects the eyes. They published their finding in the journal The Lancet.
Conjunctivitis
The doctors evoke the case of a “39-year-old bisexual white male who introduced himself to [leur] sexual health clinic with proctitis”an inflammation of the lining of the rectum, and “a group of vesicles in the anal region”. Symptoms specific to monkeypox.
But what surprised the practitioners was that three days before the appearance of these symptoms, he had “developed conjunctivitis of the left eye, with a small blister on the lower eyelid”. A symptom which, if it had not caused “no corneal damage”, was always present during his visit to the clinic. A swab of the eye blisters eventually tested positive for monkeypox.
A symptom to add to the official list?
As a precaution, Italian doctors are therefore calling on their colleagues to add, in order to detect the monkeypox, “the diagnosis of patients with vesicular and pustular ocular lesions, particularly in the presence of epidemiological links or risk factors”.
As a reminder, here is the listing Symptoms of monkey pox already made official by the health authorities: fever, headache, body aches, fatigue, rash of blisters on the face, the genito-anal area, itching, lymph nodes, mucous membranes in the mouth and genital area , sore throat.
