A new submarine cable linking Tunisia (Bizerte) to Europe, via the French city of Marseille, will be deployed under an agreement signed, Thursday, May 11, 2023, by Orange Tunisia and Medusa Submarine Cable System, operator independent underwater infrastructure in the Mediterranean.

This cable will be built in compliance with the latest international standards and rules and will benefit socio-economic actors in Tunisia, says a press release made public on the Medusa website.

Designed using the latest submarine fiber optic technologies, this cable will also offer a new very high speed connectivity solution and will improve the security of existing Internet connectivity.

Medusa will thus be the first and longest submarine cable to connect all the countries of the Mediterranean. More specifically, the system will connect the two shores of the Mediterranean and will go from Lisbon to the Egyptian city of Port Said, passing through several Mediterranean countries, according to the same source. It will feature 16 landing points in different countries, including Portugal, Morocco, Spain, Algeria, France, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt.

With a length of more than 8,000 km, this new infrastructure will bring diversity and an additional route made up of several pairs of fibers with a capacity of 20 terabits each in order to meet Tunisia’s growing needs in terms of connectivity. Implementation is scheduled for the end of 2025.
