After the numerous controversies surrounding the future site of the Olympic Games surfing events in Teahupo’o, the president of French Polynesia, Moetai Brotherson, would consider relocating the event to the spot of Taharu’u (Tahiti).

Elected last May, the president of French Polynesia, Moetai Brotherson, shares the fear of the inhabitants of Tahiti and excludes the use of the aluminum tower on the Teahupo’o site. He therefore plans to organize the event in Taharu’u, a less renowned but more accessible site on the west coast of the island. The site has the particularity of having all the infrastructure on land. Taharu’u, in Papara, has notably hosted qualifying events for the World Surf League in recent years.

On the occasion of the Pacific Islands Forum in Rarotonga (Cook Islands), Moetai Brotherson spoke to our colleagues at Agence France Presse. The president recalled that this site had already been considered before. “ This would have allowed us to avoid the problems we have today. At the time, this was not possible. Given the issues and the protest today, perhaps we can revise this option “. He also remains skeptical regarding the installation of the 14 meter high aluminum tower, “ I don’t see where we might get the barge (from the drill) […] without exploding coral ».

A response on November 15

While petition posted online by thedefense association of the Vai Ara o Teahupo’o website reached more than 150,000 signatures, and the President of Polynesia considers that the only solution is to use the wooden tower already present, the organizing committee of the Olympic Games (Cojop) justifies this project by putting forward security reasons . A technical team is working on this hypothesis and must make a decision on November 15. This delicate situation for the inhabitants of Tahiti, less than nine months before the start of the Olympic Games, might soon end.
