The communities of Elikis, Kyrenia, Rizomylos and Nikolaikos in Aegialia request the continuation of the excavations for the discovery of Ancient Eliki, in a letter to the Deputy Minister of Culture Jason Fotila.
“PtD” came into contact with the president of the Society of Friends of Ancient Eliki, archaeologist Dora Katsonopoulou, who has dedicated herself to highlighting the site in recent decades. The purpose of the communication was to see if actions have been taken in recent years to “unfreeze” the procedures and continue the excavation. Ms. Katsonopoulou believes that what needs to be done is clear: “There are no steps, there is only the application of the law, which has not happened for a decade.”
Last week, the care and protection works that are carried out on a regular basis were completed at the archaeological site. However, Ms. Katsonopoulou explains:
“Maintenance is being carried out, but excavations have been stopped for a decade. The presidents of the communities put the issue on its proper footing. Where the Ancient Helix was sought for years, our team solved the mystery. However, for 10 years there has been an unwarranted backlog. The law must be followed. It is an obligation to continue the excavations, as anything else is a violation of the law. We carry out cleaning and maintenance work every year, so that the monuments that have come to light are protected, as we should. The findings have been found in excellent condition. However, the non-continuation of the excavations without any justification also has negative consequences for the discoveries. The requested is the self-evident”.
They argue, pointing out that “the particularly important findings from the long-term research and excavations under the auspices of the University of Patras and the Society of Friends of Ancient Eliki have been presented at the Society’s five international conferences and have received worldwide recognition and acceptance.
However, instead of these findings being brought to light for the benefit of our country, they remain buried and unused, since in the last decade, without any legal justification and completely arbitrarily, the excavations have been stopped, under the sole responsibility of employees of the Ministry of Culture, as they have proven three analytical audits of the National Transparency Authority that have been sent to the audited Ministry of Culture”.
They demand that the “bureaucratic arbitrariness” cease and that the excavations by the research team that brought to light the Ancient Eliki continue immediately.
