(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Tae-soo = The plagiarism controversy surrounding singer IU’s hit song ‘Pink Shoes’ (2013) has reached a new phase.
This is because foreign musician Nectar, who was pointed out as similar to this song, recently announced that they had contacted IU to discuss the issue 10 years ago, but had not received an answer so far. Regarding this, IU’s side denied it by revealing the reply email.
According to the music industry on the 21st, Northent Entertainment Publishing, the publisher of Nectar’s music, recently posted a statement on its homepage, saying, “Until now, no one, including IU, Loen Entertainment (former agency), or Edam’s official spokesperson, has responded to our attempts to contact us on several occasions. He did not respond or contact me.”
Nordent said it had “already tried to contact us to discuss this in 2013, but there was no response.”
“I was very surprised to hear that the Korean media reported that ‘(IU’s) production manager contacted us or Nectar to clarify the copyright violation issue,'” he said. “This is not true.”
Northent did not directly mention that IU’s ‘pink shoes’ infringed on Nectar’s copyright. However, by mentioning ‘an article related to the issue of copyright infringement’, in fact, the suspicion of similarity of ‘pink shoes’ was strengthened. This is the first time Nectar has made an official statement regarding the ‘pink shoes’ controversy.
In 2013, when ‘Pink Shoes’ was released, it was pointed out that part of the melody was similar to ‘Here’s Us’ by foreign musician Nectar.
Then, IU’s side denied, “The two are completely different songs,” and explained, “The melodies may sound similar, but the chord progression is completely different.”
Some of the emails sent to Nectar by IU’s agency Edam Entertainment

Regarding this, IU’s agency, Edam, released an email exchanged between Loen and Nectar in 2013 through official SNS, and refuted, “Nectar’s claim is not true.”
The e-mail contained the content, ‘Please provide a copy of the power of attorney legally executed by Nectar members and Nordent as there are cases where the permission of the copyright holder has not been obtained for a case known as a legal representative of a foreign copyright holder.’
It also included the content that ‘we are reviewing the problem and will reply as soon as the review is completed’.
Edam explained, “This is data that supports what producer Jo Young-cheol, who produced IU’s album last month, said in a statement that ‘Nectar did not respond to e-mails and official documents trying to confirm the basic facts’.”
He also emphasized, “As Nectar claims, neither the company nor the composers have given any interviews or statements to the effect that the discussion was over at the time.”
Edam added, “We confirmed that Nectar sent an email to us once once more recently. As it is a serious matter, we sent a response to it on June 20th following going through a legal review process.”
