Personalized Solar Eclipses on Demand
A new technological marvel has launched into space, promising on-demand solar eclipses for Earth observation. The European Space Agency’s Proba-3 project, featuring two ingenious spacecraft, will meticulously block out a small section of the Sun, allowing scientists unprecedented insights into our star. This “one-of-a-kind” demonstration of cutting-edge technology could revolutionize how we observe and study the Sun.

Proba-3 is not a single spacecraft, but the culmination of teamwork. Two small satellites, each weighing just 226 pounds, were launched together, weighing in total less than any single satellite sent to orbit before.
The two spacecraft are only three feet apart.

Blocking Out the Sun: How It Works
“Proba-3 is unique in that it’s actually two spacecraft that work together to achieve this quite amazing and innovative purpose,” explained Mark Rawlings, Proba-3 Project Manager. “They’ll hover at a very precise distance, only a short distance from each other, and it’s through that very precise alignment that they can block out a small portion of the Sun.”
The mirrors onboard these spacecraft will be used to create artificial solar eclipses. This allows scientists to gleaner deeper insights into the Sun’s corona, the blazing hot outer layer of the Sun.
Decades-Long Memory: Prioritizing Long-Term Mission Success
The archival resource brilliantly highlighted the importance of deep space exploration to the future of space travel by identifying specific past malfunctions. “It’s crucial for us that this probe will last for years,” said Simone De Nicola, ESA project manager. She ADDED a profound mention.
“There’s a lot learned from earlier satellites.
Scientists will also study the Sun’s atmosphere, although later, during those extended asteroid flybys, like the ISS in 2030. “It’s very
