a new meningococcal B variant detected in Rhône-Alpes, the ARS launches a vaccination campaign

Capable of causing meningitis or septicemia, a new variant of meningococcal B has been detected in Rhône-Alpes. The Regional Health Agency is launching a vaccination campaign and recommends that 0-2 year olds and 16-24 year olds get vaccinated. So far, 12 cases of infections have been identified.

In recent months, 12 cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) B linked to a new variant have been detected in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.“, warns the ARS AURA in a press release.

The cases are concentrated in Est-Lyonnais and Savoie. The institution is launching a vaccination campaign in the areas concerned. The infection mainly affects young people, so the campaign is particularly recommended for children between 0 and 2 years old and young people between 16 and 24 years old. The vaccine is 100% reimbursed.

Fever and red or purplish spots

The disease is most often manifested by the following signs: fever, severe headache, frequently accompanied by vomiting. “Two symptoms should particularly alert: a poorly tolerated high fever, and/or one or more rapidly appearing red or purplish spots (purpura)“, warns the ARS.

Meningococcal transmission can occur through close and prolonged contact with a patient but also with a healthy person (ie carrying the infection but without symptoms).

“In general, meningococci do not cause any particular illnesses. However, in some cases, they can cause very serious illnesses such as meningitis or septicemia”explains the ARS
