A new health center in the southern provinces is expected to open at the end of 2025

The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khaled Ait Taleb, confirmed today, Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in Laayoune, that the University Hospital Center in Laayoune will be ready at the end of 2025.

Mr. Ait Taleb, during an inspection field visit to the construction workshops of this major project, accompanied by the governor of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, governor of the Laayoune region, Abdel Salam Bakrat, and the director of the National Agency for Public Equipment, Zeinab Benmoussa, highlighted that the works are progressing at an accelerated pace, noting that all the commissioned contractors are Construction work has been mobilized to accelerate the completion of this major project.

The government official added that the University Hospital Center in Laayoune, which will have a capacity of 500 beds, will form a health hub serving the residents of the southern regions of the Kingdom.

It was noted that this project, which falls within the framework of the regional health map and within the framework of the territorial health group, will have qualified human resources and will contribute to raising health indicators in the southern regions.

On the other hand, Ait Taleb highlighted that the University Hospital Center in Laayoune will also be a destination for health professionals from sub-Saharan African countries, within the framework of activating South-South cooperation, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

For his part, the representative of the Regional Directorate of Laayoune – Oued Eddahab at the National Agency for Public Equipment, Belkheir Al-Asri, indicated that the progress rate of the completion of the University Hospital Center in Laayoune reached 65 percent, and is progressing at a rapid pace.

Al-Asri highlighted that this project, which extends over a total area estimated at 180,000 square metres, of which 95,000 square meters is covered, required financial allocations amounting to one billion and 200 million dirhams to be completed.

This project, which falls within the framework of the new development model for the southern regions of the Kingdom, will improve and diversify the health supply in the southern regions, and keep pace with the training of students at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Laayoune.

This health infrastructure, which will provide a range of specialized services, consists of five floors, including, in particular, a mother and child ward, a medicine and surgery ward, a medical ward, in addition to a day hospital.

The University Hospital Center in Laayoune will also include an emergency department, an intensive care and resuscitation unit, an operating room, and a maternity department, in addition to a psychiatric hospital.
