a new first in the American AAA

The very young studio Proletariat has announced a plan to create a union. This time it extends beyond QA employees.

Unionism is progressing at a good speed in the United States in the video game sector. After the opening of the first trade union in the history of the industry in the country and in a AAA studio at Ravenet another antenna at Bethesda (Microsoft) it is the turn of the aptly named Proletariat to announce its project.

A studio-scale union

In the first two cases, it was a syndicate covering the QA teams responsible for finding bugs and participating in the finalization of a title. They are very important teams, but very little considered by the industry where wages and working conditions are poor.

This time, the workers of Proletariat want to create a studio-wide union, covering all the teams except the managers. This would therefore integrate the QA, but also the engineers, animators and producers of the studio.

If the project is completed, there is talk of a union for 57 new employees.

A new union at Activision Blizzard

The Proletariat studio was acquired by Activision Blizzard in June 2022. This young team joined the development forces of World of Warcraft a few months before the successful launch of the extension Dragonflight.

Earlier this year, when we learned that Blizzard was planning to acquire Proletariat, we started discussing how we could protect the super culture we’ve created here. By forming a union and negotiating a contract, we can ensure that we are able to continue doing our best work and creating innovative experiences at the frontier of game development.

It would therefore be the 3rd union in the studios of the American group, itself in the midst of a proposed takeover by Microsoft.
