A new fire broke out in Beirut Port and warnings of attempts to extinguish it.. Video

The General Directorate of the Lebanese Civil Defense received a report of a fire in the “remaining crops” inside the port of Beirut. The types of chemicals deposited in them, and the resulting new and complex chemical processes as a result of the mixing of the emitted gases with other gases in the air.

The General Directorate of Lebanese Civil Defense said in a statement: Any intervention to extinguish the fire, whether by water or extinguishing materials, will postpone the problem for a few days, so that the fire and smoke return to produce new effects that may cause new, more severe damage.

She added: In the framework of monitoring and follow-up, consultations were held with the Beirut Fire Brigade and the two experts who follow up the situation in the port. The first is a Swiss expert called Emmanuel Derande, who warned of the dangers of approaching the place under technical control by means of sensors, which were focused following the explosion according to the requirements of follow-up. The second is the fire expert, Francois Poichotte, who is from France, who confirmed that this fire has been repeated before and that it is not possible to control it completely because trying to extinguish it with any liquid will lead to a new fermentation that produces other gases that soon ignite once more due to the high temperatures.

And she continued her statement, saying: “The Minister of Public Works and Transport previously prevented approaching this area, in addition to similar measures taken by the Lebanese army to avoid any loss of life, given the seriousness of the situation in its surroundings, and any decision regarding that area remains up to the ministerial committee that was formed following the tragic explosion. This necessitated directing a letter this morning Wednesday 13/7/2022 from the General Directorate of Civil Defense to the committee through the Minister of Interior and Municipalities to take the appropriate decision.

She concluded her statement by saying: The General Directorate of Civil Defense, as it renews its concern for the safety of all citizens, confirms the readiness of its units for rapid intervention despite the limited capabilities available to them, but it seeks the highest standards of scientific accuracy in dealing with this type of fire in order to ensure the safety of its personnel, whether employees or volunteers. In order to prevent the occurrence of new complications with ominous consequences, it also hopes that everyone will understand the accuracy of the situation, which calls for the highest levels of coordination between the concerned authorities, which is currently taking place without any delay.”
