A new defense cooperation plan between Lithuania and the United States was signed in Washington

The document was signed by Vaidotas Urbelis, Director of Defense Policy of the Ministry of National Defense, and Celeste Wallander, Advisor to the US Secretary of Defense on International Security Affairs.

According to V.Urbelis, Lithuania and the USA are allies that equally assess threats to international security and work closely to strengthen deterrence in the Baltic region.

According to him, the countries’ defense cooperation has “expanded qualitatively” over the past year.

“We have continuous US battalion rotations in Pabrade, we are intensively improving the infrastructure to ensure the military presence of allies, including the US.” Acquisitions of military equipment from the US have increased – we are implementing more than 60 acquisition projects, acquiring capabilities such as HIMARS artillery systems, JLTV armored all-terrain vehicles, Javelin anti-tank missile systems. We also implement other ambitious projects in the development of cyber capabilities and other areas. This document shows that the Americans remain committed to actively work in the Baltic region and thus increase deterrence,” said V. Urbelis in the report.

The document defines the main areas of cooperation that the Ministry of Defense and the US Department of Defense will focus on in the coming years.

The strengthening of deterrence measures in the Baltic region, ensuring the US military presence in the region, US support for the strengthening and development of Lithuania’s defense capabilities, smooth implementation of Lithuania’s acquisitions from the US, defense industry cooperation, joint exercises and training, and others will continue.

The first defense cooperation plan between the Ministry of Defense and the US Department of Defense was signed back in 2019.

The content of the newly signed plan will be continuously reviewed and updated as needed.
