A New Chapter for Mexico’s Lower House: Sergio Gutiérrez Luna Takes the Helm

Three days after the death of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Ifigenia Martínez y Hernández, the San Lázaro Plenary Session endorsed this Tuesday the appointment of deputy Sergio Carlos Gutiérrez Luna (Morena) as the new president of the Board of Directors.

With 420 votes in favor of all parliamentary groups, the deputies accepted the modifications proposed by Morena, on the new integration of the Board of Directors of the Lower House, so that the deputy Gutiérrez Luna (Morena) occupies the position of president of San Lázaro until the conclusion of the first year of the exercise of the LXVI Legislature.

Likewise, they endorsed that the deputy María de los Dolores Padierna Luna (Morena) becomes the first vice president, and the PT deputy, José Luis Montalvo Luna, as secretary of the Board of Directors, replacing the deputy Pedro Vázquez González .

After his appointment, Deputy Gutiérrez Luna, who had already served as president of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies during the last Legislature, thanked “that the assembly has trusted them to perform these positions. Let us all have confidence that we will do so impartially, objectively and always trying to properly conduct the debate and sessions of this House.”

The coordinator of the PAN parliamentary group, Noemí Berenice Luna Ayala, expressed her congratulations and told the three members of the Board of Directors “that, along with the vote of the PAN deputies, goes the vote of confidence so that their “Acting on the Board of Directors is objective, with tolerance and respect for the plurality that exists in this Chamber of Deputies.”
