The decree of January 25, 2023, published today in the Official Journal, now opens the possibility for young patients (16 to 42 years old) to consult an orthoptist for the first prescription of corrective lenses.
This measure aims to improve access to care by:
- reducing waiting times;
- freeing up medical time for ophthalmologists for patients with more complex conditions;
- making vision care more accessible, as orthoptists are a paramedical profession, they cannot exceed fees.
Orthoptists have been authorized since 2022 to prescribe corrective glasses and contact lenses directly. They can carry out a visual assessment and a prescription, but also the conditions under which the prescription is carried out. To be effective, this measure required a final regulatory text, decree published today, which sets the list of contraindications requiring the patient to consult an ophthalmologist.
Agnès Firmin Le Bodo said “ It is a real simplification of the course and a lever for saving medical time, I am delighted with the implementation of this measure long awaited by orthoptists. Our fellow citizens will now have easier access to a healthcare professional for the prescription of first corrective lenses. »
