In a recent revelation from an upcoming book titled “Battle for the Bird” by Bloomberg’s Kurt Wagner, it was revealed that Elon Musk’s decision to fire Parag Agrawal, the former CEO of Twitter, stems from Agrawal’s refusal to ban social media account tracking, “Musk Moves two years ago”.
The book, scheduled for release on February 20, examines the history of Twitter, including Musk’s acquisition of the company in 2022 and its significant cultural influence. According to excerpts, Musk urged Agrawal to ban “ElonJet,” a Twitter account run by American programmer Jack Sweeney. Which was monitoring Musk’s carbon footprint, and Agrawal’s refusal allegedly prompted Musk to buy Twitter shares and eventually take over the company, which led to Agrawal’s dismissal.
Reports in early 2022 indicate that Musk initially offered Sweeney $5,000 to stop his tracking activities, to which Sweeney responded by asking for $50,000 or an internship. Despite the media attention, Musk decided not to pay Sweeney. Instead, he blocked his personal Twitter account.
ElonJet was later banned following a stalker targeted a car carrying Musk’s two-year-old son. Musk announced legal action once morest Sweeney and his supporting organizations via Twitter. The book notes that Musk’s interaction with Twitter, including Agrawal’s dismissal, was instrumental in his decision to pursue ownership of the platform, and Musk finally acquired Twitter for $44 million in October 2022 following failed attempts to join its board of directors.
In March 2022, Musk expressed his belief that Agrawal was not the “fire-breathing dragon” Twitter needed, indicating a desire for a more assertive leadership style within the company.
Agrawal’s firing highlights the complex dynamics between tech moguls and social media platforms, and highlights the influence of individuals like Musk in shaping the direction of online discourse and corporate governance.
