A new AirTag in the works

Apple is reportedly working on a new generation of its object tracker.

According to a recent tweet from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on a new generation of its object tracker, namely the AirTag. Indeed, Apple might announce the AirTag 2 in the course of 2024. The presentation of the AirTag 1 took place in April 2021. This would then make a gap of three and a half years between the two announcements.

In theory, the new tracker should integrate the U2 chip, which would improve the accuracy of location tracking. A significant gain for tracking accuracy.

A new AirTag to facilitate tracking

The current AirTag uses a U1 chip for location tracking and precise searching. However, the U1 chip is not available on all Apple devices, which may limit tracking accuracy. The U2 chip, on the other hand, is available on all Apple devices with an A12 Bionic chip or newer. This means the AirTag 2 will be more accurate regardless of the device used to track it.

In addition to the U2 chip, the AirTag 2 might sport a new design and gain strength. It might also be compatible with new features, such as indoor location or real-time location.

At this stage, Kuo does not mention the price of the device or the complementary uses of the future AirTag. He says all the same that this new tracker is being designed. At this time, Apple has not yet communicated anything on this subject.

And you, what do you think of this rumor?
