A new achievement after the World Cup; Messi chosen as best footballer of 2022 by International Football Federation History and Statistics, Mbappe second in the tally

Messi also won the player of the tournament award in 2014 when Argentina lost to Germany in the final.

Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to their third World Cup victory, has been named the best player of the calendar year 2022 by the International Football Federation History and Statistics (IFFHS). Messi has won 275 points.

Second on the list is Kylian Mbappe, who became the first player since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. The French player scored 35 points. Karim Benzema (30), Luka Modric (15) and Erling Haaland (5) are right behind.
In 2022, Messi scored 55 goals for club and country, including 35 goals and 30 assists. He scored seven goals and assisted three times in the World Cup. He won the Golden Ball for the second time in his career. Messi also won the player of the tournament award in 2014 when Argentina lost to Germany in the final.

Messi was welcomed by PSG teammates and staff following returning to France to play club football following winning the World Cup. Apart from the memento, the PSG players welcomed Messi with a guard of honour. Messi returned to Paris from Argentina following celebrating FIFA World Cup 2022 victory with friends and family. A guard of honor was given by the PSG players and support staff who came to train at the Parc des Princes, PSG’s headquarters. He was also presented with a special trophy at a felicitation function organized by the club.
