A new accent decorated the Neris waterfront park in Kaunas: “Cloud containers” stretching into the sky

As the Kaunas City Municipality informs in a press release, the 5-6 meter high sculptures standing in the newly revived Neris waterfront park invite you not to pass by, but to stop and admire them.

“This work touches on the themes of ecology and sustainability, symbolizes the accumulation of things at home, which is closely related to consumerism. Roofs are like a kind of “containers” hanging above our heads.

Passers-by can look at the sculptures not only from the outside, but also by standing under them, looking towards the clouds. Art brings a lot of life and uniqueness to the city. I hope that this sculpture will also have an impact in its own way,” says artist Algimantas Šlapikas.

The author reveals that the name for his accent was suggested by the Google Cloud platform, and the windows of the cabin themselves resemble the Window 95 logo.

The location of the work in the Neries waterfront park was not chosen by chance. According to the author, this space is perfect for the scale and materiality of the exhibit. Tall and narrow elements – “legs” – blend harmoniously into the overall environment. The wide part of the sculpture – the “container” – that rises above the treetops looks like a tree house.

Sculptor A. Šlapikas says that he likes to create multi-layered art, so he hopes that this work of his will affect everyone differently, taking into account the available experiences, associations and even education.

“Cloud Containers” complemented the rich display of artworks in the open air. “Kaunas Aksentai” is an initiative that has been active since 2017. Artists are invited and financially encouraged to propose ideas, to decorate the city’s public spaces with sculptures, design objects, light installations and street paintings.

The works are financed by the Kaunas City Municipality.
