Charbone Hydrogène, a company specializing in the production of green hydrogen, plans to develop a supply network this summer in Quebec.

The race to electrify transport is in full swing. Electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are popular, and sales of these products are increasing year following year. To continue the development of electric mobility, several alternatives are emerging around the world, including the use ofhydrogen as a source of energy for the operation of the vehicles of tomorrow.

Almost completely erased from the Canadian automobile industry, hydrogen is nevertheless a chemical element that is increasingly present in the world market. It is also for this reason that Carbon Hydrogen, a company specializing in this field, will open its first green hydrogen production plant in Sorel-Tracy during the summer. The company also plans to offer a series of hydrogen refueling stations in Quebec.

New stations this summer

During an exclusive telephone interview with RPM, the company’s CEO, Dave Gagnon, revealed that Charbone Hydrogène has signed a partnership agreement with Filgo-Sonic. This company, focused on the marketing of fuel oil across Quebec, will be a key collaborator in the distribution of hydrogen to Quebec motorists, according to Dave Gagnon. Indeed, thanks to the construction of the green hydrogen plant and the partnership with Filgo-Sonic, the CEO is convinced that several supply stations will emerge in Quebec in the very short term.

According to the information gathered, Quebec and Montreal would be the first two cities in Quebec to obtain at least one supply establishment. No amount of stations have been confirmed, but the CEO sounded optimistic on the call. In addition, he expressed that a station might be set up in Toronto to allow motorists to travel between Montreal and Toronto without difficulty.

Originally from Saguenay, Dave Gagnon also mentioned that he wanted to travel the road from Montreal to Saguenay at the wheel of a hydrogen vehicle. He also indicated that projects are underway, and that a refueling station might also be functional in the Saguenay region in the very short term.

green hydrogen

Although the sale of hydrogen vehicles is still marginal, Daniel Charrette, Head of Operations at Charbone Hydrogène, believes that this chemical element remains a very interesting alternative in the race to electrify transport. He nevertheless specifies that hydrogen is a viable solution, as long as it is manufactured with a renewable energy source. The specialist adds that this energy will first be used in the field of heavy transport.

According to Daniel Charrette, hydrogen of the blue or gray type, created from non-renewable energy, generates 10 kilos of GHGs for 1 kilo of production. On the other hand, green hydrogen would not emit any GHG for the same kilo of finished material. Thanks to the use of hydroelectricity, Charbone promises to manufacture only green hydrogen, which would make it a leader in the industry in the eyes of the company.

Fewer rare materials

This would therefore mean that green hydrogen would be a clean energy source to power the fuel cell of future electric vehicles. In addition, hydrogen would reduce the impact of rare materials found in the batteries currently available on the market. Often singled out as a major source of pollution in the design of electric vehicles, hydrogen might give automakers the chance to reduce the size of the batteries in their product. According to Daniel Charrette, the battery of hydrogen vehicles would use 10% of extremely rare materials currently found in industry.

Moreover, Charbone explains that hydrogen is intended to complement the various technologies on the market. Still according to Dave Gagnon, hydrogen actually attacks fossil fuels to allow motorists to obtain a simple, fast and efficient source of fuel. Thanks to an association with the manufacturer Hyundai, Charbone has obtained 3 copies of the Hyundai Nexo, the hydrogen vehicle of the South Korean manufacturer. This promises 600 kilometers on a single tank, and Dave Gagnon specifies that he only needs 5 minutes to fill the vehicle’s tank. The full tank, with a capacity of 5 kilos, costs $90 at today’s price per kilo.

Beyond any doubt, Carbon Hydrogen is convinced that green hydrogen is a solution for tomorrow’s mobility. Despite everything, and following a few pointed questions during the telephone interview, the company remains well aware that hydrogen still has a long way to go to have a place of choice in the market.

Charbone Hydrogène is finalizing its production plant in Sorel-Tracy. Dave Gagnon clarified that Charbone’s objective was to open two other plants in the medium term, in Manitoba and the United States, but that the company would mainly devote its energy to the province of Quebec for the time being.

IN SUMMARY :

Hydrogen refueling stations in Montreal, Quebec, Toronto and Saguenay are expected soon. A partnership with Filgo-Sonic has been concluded.
