A Mysterious Twist to Frankfurt’s Friday Night Celebrations at Dippemess and World Club Dome

Frankfurt is taking part in Earth Night 2024 today. From 10 p.m. onwards it should remain as dark as possible. Dippemess and World Club Dome are probably excluded.

Frankfurt – This evening (6 September) there will be plenty of party hustle and bustle and a festival atmosphere in Frankfurt: In addition to the start of the autumn edition of the Dippemess 2024 on the fairground next to the Frankfurt Ice Rink, Deutsche Bank Park “Europe’s largest club festival”, the World Club Dome 2024. Be it the breakdancers and numerous other rides at the Dippemess or the stage performances of top acts at the live music festival in the arena: There will be plenty of flashing and lighting.

This evening is also the so-called “Earth Night” 2024. And the city of Frankfurt has announced that it will take part. The aim of this night is to reduce as much artificial light and outdoor lighting as possible from the evening hours, at the latest from 10 p.m.

Because: Be it brightly lit shop windows, street lamps, glaring advertising banners and lettering on buildings, effectively illuminated gardens, monuments or churches: in many parts of the world, artificial light drives away the darkness. But too much light harms animals and Plant out of balance and also harms people.

The Frankfurt Climate– and Environment Minister Tina Zapf-Rodríguez (Greens) is therefore calling on all Frankfurt residents to take part in Earth Night 2024. Together, we can create a Sign against light pollution set.

“Increasing light pollution worsens our sleep quality, makes Starry sky fade and has serious consequences for the flora and fauna,” says Zapf-Rodríguez. “In addition, the increasing use of artificial light at night is an enormous waste of energy and is damaging to the climate,” adds the department head.

The Earth Night campaign is an initiative launched in September 2020 by “Paten der Nacht”, a non-profit organization that works to reduce light pollution in Germany and Austria.

Unlike Earth Hourin which the lights are turned off or dimmed for one hour on an evening in March every year, Earth Night aims to switch off or significantly reduce artificial outdoor light for the entire night after dusk.

Measures for responsible use of the resource light include, for example, switching off or reducing outdoor lighting, installing motion detectors, switching to warm white light and shielding light sources towards the ground, according to the city of Frankfurt.

In Frankfurt, the city announced, the spotlights on several buildings will remain switched off or dimmed, including the Eiserner Steg and the Untermainbrücke as well as several churches. The city’s schools will also remain unlit.

Green Party politician Zapf-Rodríguez hopes that today’s Earth Night 2024 in Frankfurt will provide insights into where artificial light is really needed, where it can be left out and where it can be used more specifically.”
