A musician’s journey from a remote village in Swat to Coke Studio

District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Swat The tourist valley of Bahrain The melodious voice of a 19-year-old shepherd from Nizamuddin Torwali has come down from the mountains for the first time due to his magical voice and is exposed to the urban life.

Torwali from a village called ‘Tep Siban’ because of his melodious and pained voice Coke Studio reached, where he recorded a song on the hospitality of the highlands and climate change, which has gone viral on social media.

In a conversation with Independent Urdu, Nizamuddin Torwali said that ‘I am a resident of a hilly area far from the city and I was very fond of Bachban with Zhou. Here I took care of my guests so Allah took care of me.

‘Zhu is sung at festivals. It is made either out of love or out of grief. It is also sung at weddings.’

Zhu is said to be a well-known genre of Tuvali poetry.

Torwali added: ‘Where I live there is no internet or signals. Abrar and Waqar Bhai came with the British. I told them Zhu and they invited me to Coke Studio.’

Torwali, who spent his entire life in the far-flung Tep Siban, liked the atmosphere of Karachi very much. “For me, the atmosphere there (Karachi) was very good. I sang Zhu there. There were trees, there were flowers in Coke Studio, the place felt like a tapestry, and I enjoyed the atmosphere there.’

Torwali composed this song inspired by the damages caused by climate change in his area.

Culture Guest Set Concept Designer of Torwali Malik Abrar Ahmed Khan told Independent Urdu that the language spoken in Torwali region is an ancient and historical language, which is spoken by about one and a half lakh people.

“In the first phase, we highlighted Torwali and Tepp Siban on social media, then Coke Studios approached us to work on this culture and language. We and Nizamuddin Torwali are very happy that a song will be recorded in this language for the first time in Coke Studio.’
