a more practical device but still just as useful

Made popular by Apple with its famous Airtags, geolocation trackers were not unknown at Samsung. A few months before the presentation of the small box from the Apple brand, the South Korean giant also added the SmartTag and the SmartTag+. The principle was the same: find the objects to which the tracker is attached.

We were then at the beginning of 2021. Two years later, Samsung returned with a new version of the SmartTag: the Galaxy SmartTag 2. Clearly, the efforts were not put on the branding of the device but rather on interesting new features and improvements for a tracker of this type. The most striking change, however, remains the design.

Going from a square format to something more elongated and rounded, the SmartTag 2 above all offers a larger loop (metallic moreover, giving it increased resistance) which allows it to be attached almost anywhere. Where the old versions served more as a “key ring”, the 2023 model will be able to be placed more easily on a bag or luggage.

In addition to this new look, the Galaxy SmartTag 2 also sees its battery improved. Samsung announces an increase of almost 50% in autonomy (rising to 500 days) but also adds an energy saving mode which extends the duration of the tracker even further (up to 700 days). Please note, however, that once this period has passed, you simply need to change the product’s battery.

Let’s also talk regarding another integration: the Lost Mode function. We now have the possibility of adding our coordinates to the Galaxy SmartTag 2. If someone finds it, they can scan the device’s tag (thanks to the NFC reader) to see a message with these coordinates and we find more easily. A novelty interesting enough to be mentioned.

A big negative point, which can however be blamed on a lot of market players, is that the Galaxy SmartTag 2 is only compatible with… Galaxy devices. If you don’t have Samsung devices, then move on.

How it works ?

As a picture is worth a thousand words, we tested the loss of our SmartTag for you. A big risk since it was lost in our small apartment. We therefore activate the “Search nearby” option in the application menu on our smartphone. Because if you have the geographical position of the device (and therefore its location on a GPS map), you sometimes have to be more precise to find it.

An animation therefore starts to show us, following the signal, where the device is located. The closer we get, the stronger it will be and the application will be able to tell us the direction and the distance that separates us from it. Once nearby, we can even switch to VR mode to see on our screen where our SmartTag is really hidden.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 is available, in black or white, at a price of 39.99 euros.
