A million cubic meters of rock broke off

120,000 trucks might have been filled with the rock that broke off the southern summit of the Flüchthorn last Sunday. A total of one million cubic meters thundered down the Tyrolean Silvretta Group towards the valley.

The new southern summit of the Flughorn is now 19 meters lower (3380 instead of the previous 3399 meters) and is around 30 meters northeast of the original location, as state geologist Thomas Figl announced on Friday.

The extent of the rockfall was measured using a laser attached to a helicopter. In this way, highly accurate data on the surface of the demolition area and the immediate vicinity were collected. “By comparing it with measurement data from 2018, the cubature might be determined. We were also able to create visualizations of the changes,” says Maria Attwenger from the Geoinformation Department of the State of Tyrol. “In cooperation with the municipality of Galtür and the Landeck district authority, we are now examining to what extent the currently closed hiking trails in the area can be relocated,” says the state geologist.

The cause of the massive rock fall, in which fortunately no one was injured, was localized by the state geology to the rising permafrost. Further rock falls in the high alpine area cannot be ruled out. There is a risk of this from an altitude of 2500 meters – that is, at least in Austria, far away from populated areas.
