A meteorite ignites the sky… and the web

The meteorite, elegantly named SAR2667, was about 1m in diameter and disintegrated safely in the atmosphere. It has been observed in Great Britain but also in France and Belgium. Around 4 a.m., the object entered the atmosphere at a speed of 17 km per second causing a blinding green flash of light.

It is an impressive phenomenon but not exceptional since, each year, approximately 2 tons of “extraterrestrial” debris fall on Earth. What hinders their observation is that they can fall during the day, and in this case the sunlight acts as a screen. But often, they fall in the open sea and therefore, far from any observer, which is logical since our planet is mainly covered with water.
