On July 6, around 4 a.m., the young woman was drinking coffee with a friend on her terrace when an object fell on the roof of the neighboring house. Quite surprised, they also heard a big “poum”, reports the newspaper Les Dernieres nouvelles d’Alsace.
The resident then felt pain in her ribs: “In the second that followed, I felt a shock on my ribs. I thought it was an animal, a bat!” she told the local newspaper.
With the help of her friend, she manages to find the “pebble” responsible for the incident in the garden. But she has a doubt regarding the nature of this stone and decides to call on the geologist Thierry Rebmann to obtain some clarifications. This denier is certain, it is a meteorite. “This pebble looks like a volcanic rock. It is a stone that crosses the earth’s atmosphere, it is grilled due to oxygen and friction”, he explains to our colleagues from France bleu Alsace. But in general, “it disappears completely, it’s what we call shooting stars. Except that there was material there, regarding 50 grams”, he continues.
”To find a meteorite is rare, but in addition to being in direct contact and having it fall from the sky, it is almost a unique case. We haven’t had that for decades in our regions,” adds the geologist. According to him, the probability of such a thing happening is “on the order of a chance in 100 million”.
Fortunately, the resident affected by the meteorite was not seriously injured by the collision and simply survived with a bruise at the place of impact.
Fake news ?
However for the magazine sky&space, the probability that it is a real meteorite is very low or even nil. “When a meteorite falls from the sky it arrives at approximately 300 km/h, the roof would have been crossed, this is not the case here”, explains astronomer François Colas of the IMCCE. He adds that none of the cameras of the FRIPON sky surveillance network detected such an object that night. “Such an object reaches magnitude -15, it does not go unnoticed, in this season there are also many amateur astronomers who observe, they would have reported such an event”, he adds.
Another element that sows doubt is the appearance of the rock which would be volcanic with a rough and irregular surface. However, a meteorite has a very smooth surface due to the fusion crust formed by its entry into the atmosphere.
