a medical bus to fight against medical deserts

This fitted out motorhome criss-crosses several towns in the east of the department to make up for the lack of treating doctors. The inhabitants who went to consult there are satisfied with the service.

The space is narrower there than in a classic office, but that’s normal: the medical consultation takes place in a “medicobus”, a fitted out motorhome which criss-crosses the communes in the east of the Orne department.

The objective of this atypical vehicle? Make up for the lack of attending physicians in the region. The inhabitants who consulted there are satisfied. “There are really towns where there are zero doctors, so it’s very positive,” says Micheline, interviewed by BFMTV.

“It’s a little more cramped, but otherwise it’s equivalent: the doctor is doing a good job,” confirms André, who also came to be examined.

Once contacted by individuals in need, the medical bus parks in front of a health center or a town hall in a town in need of doctors. The vehicle is then able to receive patients.

15.3 million French people affected by the lack of general practitioners

Jean-Michel Gal, president of the Médicobus association and general practitioner, explains that part of the bus is devoted to reception and the other, equipped with instruments, to examine.

The area served by the bus has 89,000 inhabitants. 9,000 of them did not have a doctor in October 2020, when this bus then turned into a doctor’s office. According to Jean-Michel Gal, this figure would be three times lower thanks to this mobile cabinet.

According to the UFC-Que Choisir association, access to a general practitioner would be difficult for 15.3 million French people.

Note that to reach the service, simply dial: 06 24 79 59 44. Conventional consultations, in real offices, are also possible, as well as telemedicine.
