The Greek D1 match between Atromitos and AEK Athens has been postponed for goals deemed too small!
This is one of the unusual scenes of this weekend of European football. This Sunday in Greece, the match between Atromitos and AEK Athens was postponed following the visiting team noticed that the goals were too small compared to regulatory standards. During the reconnaissance of the field, the AEK players called on the referees, judging that something was wrong on one of the goals. The match officials then found that the height of the crossbar was 5 to 7 centimeters lower than the regulations. The Atromitos staff then got busy digging the lawn to close the gap before the referees noticed that the other goal was also affected! (3 to 5 centimeters apart).
The postponement decided
An hour and a half following the official start time of the match (4:30 p.m.), the referees decided to postpone the game, not convinced by the efforts of Atromitos who were trying to dig the goal lines. Following the formalization of the postponement, AEK Athens asked to win the match on green carpet, blaming their opponent. A tussle between the leaders of the two clubs followed. Peristeri owner Giorgos Spanos says it’s funny that a ‘great team’ like AEK are looking for ‘funny excuses’ rather than winning on the pitch, otherwise defending themselves from a gap only a few centimeters. The Atromitos manager even attacked the referees, saying the match should have been played. In the end, the two teams might not face each other, it remains to be seen what will be the decision of the Greek league concerning the fate of the meeting.
