31 detainees escaped yesterday morning from a detention center under the Qasr al-Adl bridge in Beirut, following they managed to smuggle a tool to their prison that helped them carry out this operation, according to security and judicial sources.
The Internal Security Forces said in a statement, “Immediate orders were given to arrest the fugitives,” adding that “the investigation is underway, under the supervision of the competent judiciary, to determine the circumstances of their escape.”
Yesterday morning, an AFP correspondent saw security forces deployed in the Qasr al-Adl area.
A judicial source said, requesting anonymity, that “the fugitives are of several nationalities, including Lebanese, Syrians, Palestinians and foreigners, and they escaped on Saturday night,” adding, “An administrative investigation is now underway, a census of the number of prisoners and confirmation of their identity.”
For his part, a security source said that they sawed an iron window using a saw that was secretly entered into the prison.
Adliya Prison is subject to the authority of the Prisons Administration, following it was previously under Public Security.
