A man took his own life after jumping from the Manhattan Fashion Institute building

The New York Police Department (NYPD) mourned the death of a 37-year-old man following jumping this Sunday morning from the roof of the Manhattan Fashion Institute. The authorities also detailed that a watchman tried to prevent the tragedy, but the man the security employee ran to the edge and jumped into the void.

Police have not released any further details regarding the man or his motives. During February 2022, the city of New York made a call for suicide prevention following the New York City Department of Health (DOHMH), determined that a suicide occurred every 16 hours in the five boroughs of New York.

Figures from the Department of Health detailed that in 2020, 542 suicides were reported in New York City. Only him 2.4% of 18-year-old adults had suicidal thoughts and 14.1% attempted suicide that year, according to the DOHMH study.

121 deceased were of Latino originthe second group most affected by suicides in the city, following Caucasians who recorded 225 fatalities, while Afro-descendants appear in a third group, with 91 deaths.

According to new figures published in early February by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), deaths by suicide increased in the United States from 45,979 to 48,183 cases. This represents an increase of 4.79%, in addition to the fact that the CDC accounts show that for every 100,000 inhabitants there are approximately 14.1 suicides.
