The shocking case of slavery that was revealed in Portugal, with the victim of a 54-year-old man who endured inhumane conditions for 17 years.
Regarding the case, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations of the Portuguese Police announced yesterday Wednesday (01.05.2024) the arrest of four suspects. The case was revealed in the region of Braganza, in the northeastern tip of the country.
The police report said the 54-year-old had been subjected to physical and psychological abuse for almost two decades and had been a victim of labor exploitation, including being “hired out” to third parties for agricultural work.
The victim had learning difficulties and no family support. He was not paid for his work and his every move was monitored by the inmates, who were in possession of the 54-year-old’s documents, according to authorities.
Describing the “degrading living conditions”, police say the man was sleeping in a van, malnourished and denied the slightest medical care. “The defendants never allowed him to receive medical attention, even when he had a serious accident,” it is underlined.
Although his injuries have left him with mobility problems, he managed to escape and is now being cared for by specialist staff, Portuguese police said.
According to newsit, the detainees, aged 37-44, will appear before an investigator accused of slavery, human trafficking and forgery. Police have not released the nationality of the 54-year-old victim.
Cases of labor exploitation and human trafficking are increasing in Portugalespecially in the agricultural sector. There have been several recorded cases of poor migrants being forced to work unpaid on farms.
In November, hundreds of police raided farms in the Alentejo region, arresting 28 people suspected of human trafficking and labor exploitation.
