A man in critical condition after an assault in Montreal North

A 30-year-old man was in critical condition last night following a violent fight over a narcotics case in Montreal North.

The argument between two men would have degenerated shortly before 5 p.m. on the sidewalk at the intersection of rue de Charny and rue Laurier.

A 23-year-old physically attacked the 38-year-old, beating him while he was on the ground, witnesses said.

A father who was returning from daycare with his four-year-old son came running when he saw the injured man lying in the snow.

“He was really messed up. My son kept repeating “oh boo the gentleman”, testified to the Journal Jason Carbray, who came to the aid of the victim without thinking twice.

Without a coat and in flip-flops by -10 degrees Celsius, the man seemed inert at first sight.

“He was on his side and not moving. When he finally opened his eyes, I asked him his name, and where we were, and he had no idea.

Trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Mr Carbray advised him to stay still while waiting for help, who arrived soon following.

Semi-conscious and intoxicated, the victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to the public relations officer for the Montreal Police Service, Caroline Chevrefils.

By mid-evening, however, his condition had stabilized.

The other individual involved in the conflict has been arrested and will be questioned.

The scene has been secured and an investigation is ongoing.
