On Friday, July 19 at 9:10 p.m., the alarm center received a report that a man was sitting in the river with his head above water in the village of Pälli in the Lääne-Nigula municipality.
Professional rescuers from Haapsalu and Rist commandos, volunteer rescuers from Palivere and an ambulance responded to the scene. The rescuers arrived at the scene and brought the man out of the water, but it was not possible to save his life.
This year, 15 people have drowned in Estonia.
Tips for a safe bathing season:
- Never leave children unattended near water. A drowning child does not make a sound, so teach your child swimming skills from an early age and talk regarding the dangers of water.
- Always wear lifesaving equipment when entering a body of water by watercraft. In an accident, it is very difficult or even impossible to put on a life jacket. Almost all victims of watercraft accidents would be alive if they were wearing a life jacket.
- Go into the water only sober! When you are with friends by the water, keep in mind that if alcohol is also consumed, people may not adequately assess their abilities. Don’t let a drunk friend into the water!
- Before going into the water, always critically assess the water temperature, transparency, depth, current, waves, the banks of the water body and the type of bottom.
- Do not jump into the water in an unknown place!
