The Bank of Ireland has apologized following fixing a technical issue that allowed customers to withdraw or transfer more money than was in their account.

The glitch caused customers to rush and form large queues around some ATMs on Tuesday and into the night, as news spread on social media, prompting the bank to call the police.

Some reports stated that customers who did not have money in their accounts were able to withdraw up to 1,000 euros ($1,100), according to “AFP” and viewed by “Al Arabiya.net.”

Bank warning!

For its part, the bank warned customers yesterday, Wednesday, that withdrawals and transfers, including those that exceed the normal limits, will be deducted from the balance, which may lead to converting them into costly overdrafts.

“Night payments may appear to accounts throughout the day. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” he added when announcing the fix. “We know it was well below the standards our customers have come to expect of us.”

The Irish central bank has previously fined the Bank of Ireland for deficiencies in its IT systems and said it was monitoring the fallout from the outage.
