Core consumer inflation in Japan in April continued to be well above the 2 percent target by the authorities, while a leading indicator that excludes the effects of fuel reached a four-decade high.

Data released on Friday showed that the nationwide core consumer price index, which excludes fresh food but includes energy items, rose 3.4 percent in April year-on-year, in line with analysts’ expectations but higher than March’s 3.1 percent.

The index, which excludes both fresh food and fuel, and is closely watched by the Bank of Japan as the most prominent gauge of demand-driven domestic price trends, rose 4.1 percent in April on an annual basis, at the fastest pace since September 1981.
