A “significant fire” occurred in a building in Monthey, the Valais cantonal police announced on Monday evening. An intervention is still in progress, with the police and firefighters on the spot.
The burning building is located at rue du Simplon. “This is a complex that houses several businesses and stores and also apartments,” a police spokesman told Keystone-ATS.

The building is destroyed, but no information concerning possible injuries was available at first.
Around 10 p.m., regarding an hour and a half following the start of the disaster, the situation “was more or less under control”, but there were still flames, said the spokesperson. More precise information is announced for Tuesday morning at the latest.
On videos circulating on Twitter, a large and thick plume of smoke in the sky of Monthey was visible from afar on Monday evening.
