A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Tokyo

The extent of damage in areas closest to the epicenter is not yet clear, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said his government had not received any reports of major damage, speaking from his office in Tokyo shortly after the quake.

The epicenter of the quake was in southern Kanagawa Prefecture, next to the capital, at a depth of 10 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

Kanagawa is not within the western zone along the Pacific coast, known as the Nankai Basin, which was specifically designated in yesterday’s warning as the site of a major earthquake of magnitude 8 or above.

No tsunami warning was issued after the government had sent strong earthquake warnings to residents in Tokyo and the Kanagawa, Saitama, Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures.

Some train lines, including the Central Japan/Shinkansen high-speed trains, stopped operating in areas near Tokyo and Kanagawa.

There were no reports of damage at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant and the thermal power plants in Kanagawa, public broadcaster NHK said.
