The weight of school begins to be felt. And with the start of the new school year on its way, parents of students are faced with the recurring problem of choosing a schoolbag for their children. For the past year, a couple of osteopaths have been offering a range of products “made in France” supposed to reduce back pain. An initiative that gave birth, in the Oise, to the company Bon Chic Bon Dos.
“We realized, my husband and I, that among our young patients, more and more were those who suffered from low back pain or scoliosis problems. And these problems were often amplified by carrying heavy loads such as school bags. Its weight can sometimes reach 30% of that of a child, whereas the latter should not carry more than 10%”, says Séverine Divay to 20 Minutes.
Adapted to the different morphologies of children
This osteo has been practicing for more than fifteen years in Clermont and her husband, in Beauvais, in the Oise. This shared observation gave them the idea of tackling this scourge that affects more and more children: back pain. “As we cannot change the weight of the school bag, we imagined that it would be more suitable for the different morphologies of children to preserve their health”, explains Séverine Divay.
Especially since this practitioner showed a desire for change. “A big lumbago, in 2019, before the Covid-19 epidemic had alerted me to the fear of no longer being able to exercise with my small size, she admits. This project to launch us into the development and marketing of ergonomic schoolbags therefore germinated during confinement. »
In collaboration with a workshop in Savoie
Accompanied by occupational therapists and following months of collaboration with a French workshop, in Savoie, specialist in high mountain backpacks, both manage to manufacture their own “made in France” models. A family affair since the prototype was designed by a close graphic designer and it was the three children who served as “guinea pigs”, “rewarded with kisses and hugs”, jokes the mother.
It is in the summer of 2022 that the Bon Chic Bon Dos site is open on the Internet. “The results of the first year are rather positive,” says Séverine Divay, who now devotes part of her time to promoting the company. Despite a fairly high price (180 euros), the satchels find takers thanks to their unique qualities.
“The principle is to evenly distribute the loads of equipment, underlines the new co-manager within an incubator, in Compiègne. Bulky objects take place once morest the back to avoid shifting the weight of the bag to the rear, for example. And spaces are dedicated for the diary, the water bottle or even a magnetic kit. » Foam is adapted to children’s backs and a system makes it easy to adjust the straps according to the clothes you are wearing.
Locally made decorative accessories
The size of the satchel also adapts to body type: 35 cm for children under 1.20 m and the classic 38 cm for taller children. As its solidity allows it to be kept for several years, it is customizable thanks to decorative accessories made locally by designers. “When the child is fed up with an accessory, he can change it,” says Séverine Divay. The schoolbag can thus more easily be passed on to the little brother or sister.
The year 2023 also saw the creation of school backpacks for middle and high school students. The next project: a posture aid product for writing. The couple of osteos also plans to invest physical points of sale within concept store, these small shops that stand out from the big brands. With four million schoolchildren, the margin for growth in sales is great.
