A Liquid Continent: Exploring the Surprising World of Abraham Poincheval at the Chamarande Estate

He brooded eggs and gave birth to a chick, he spent nine days in a rock where he lived another thirteen days inside a bear… It is an understatement to say that Abraham Poincheval knows how to surprise. This 51-year-old French artist, considered one of the most important performers of his generation, is honored at the Chamarande estate. Until November 26, the Orangerie is hosting “A liquid continent”, an exhibition dedicated to his new project: crossing the Atlantic aboard a sailing theater accompanied by puppets representing personalities or characters who nourish his imagination, such as Marcel Duchamp, pioneer of Dadaism, Arthur Cravan, Swiss poet and boxer, or even SpongeBob, cartoon hero.

At the Domaine de Chamarande, the public can discover a set of preparatory works presented by the artist: watercolours, a model-sculpture, a puppet, as well as the sailboat produced for the exhibition, which will be presented in a second time in the park of the domain, within the Buffet d’eau. Kinds of hors d’oeuvres before the performance not yet programmed but under development.

“This project is the latest in a continuous research process that began at the start of his career,” says Gilles Rion, responsible for exhibitions and the Essonne Departmental Contemporary Art Fund. The exhibition proposes a resonance of this gestational and evolutionary process with previous performances by the artist to which the works presented echo and give substance. »

Visitors will thus be able to discover behind the scenes of certain projects by Abraham Poincheval which have caused a lot of talk. Like “Inside Barthélémy”, his latest: in March 2023, he stayed for a week inside a sculpture bearing the effigy of Saint Barthélémy, inspired by a statuette dating from the 15th century and from the collections of the museum of art and history of Friborg (Switzerland).

Chamarande, July 26, 2023. The Orangery of the Domaine de Chamarande is hosting an exhibition by performance artist Abraham Poincheval.

“The link created with the public through this envelope was quite strong: the image of the saint, of the myth, takes over and the exchanges borrow the bias created by this image”, testifies Abraham Poincheval on a cartel of the exhibition.

The public also discovers one of the models of the famous “Pierre” in which he locked himself up for a week during a performance at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2017. Or the steel replica of a 14th century armor custom molded to his body, weighing over 30 kg and which he wore to cross Brittany for 120 km in 2018 and to travel 280 km in Quebec in 2022.

It’s a safe bet that his next performance, “A Liquid Continent” will still make noise. Abraham Poincheval is therefore a great gift to the Chamarande estate by offering, in a way, the first of his new project and his first drafts. No wonder when you remember that the estate has already hosted big names in contemporary art such as Richard Combas and Ben.
