Dengue
People usually contract the dengue virus from a bite from the yellow fever mosquito or an Asian tiger mosquito. According to figures from the Eurocross emergency center, 112 Dutch people contracted this tropical disease in the last six months. A significant increase compared to previous years according to Eurocross.
Unlike most viruses, the symptoms usually become more dangerous with a second or third infection with the dengue virus. Someone with dengue fever can bleed, go into shock or suffer serious organ damage. There are four variants of the dengue virus and there is no treatment for any of them.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of dengue infections has increased tenfold since 2000. In 2023, 6.5 million people were infected in 80 countries, of which 7,300 died. It is not known how many Dutch victims the dengue virus claimed.
