In a judicial precedent, a young Saudi man managed to obtain a divorce ruling from his bride following three months of the marriage contract, according to the newspaper.Okaz“Local.
According to the newspaper, the Personal Status Court in the coastal city of Jeddah received a lawsuit from a man who stated in his lawsuit that he married a university girl, and gave her a dowry of 50,000 riyals (more than $13,000), and a net of a golden set.
According to the merits of the lawsuit filed by the man, “there are many problems between us, and the bride has banned my mobile number (Block), as well as my ban on the messaging application (WhatsApp).”
He added, “I might not contact her by phone or WhatsApp, and I contacted her father to no avail. Therefore, I ask to compel her to submit to the marital home, or to return my dowry and the engagement network.”
On the other hand, the father of the bride said that the groom kept his daughter for hours for long periods of time, and performed behaviors that made him hated by her, and that his daughter was not ready to submit to him until following she completed her university studies following two years.
The groom responded to that by saying that what her father said regarding him sitting and secluded with his bride is true, and what he mentioned regarding “disliking” her is not true.
After a remote confrontation session and listening to witnesses between the two parties, the groom decided that he had no objection to his marriage to his bride in exchange for her returning him the entire dowry and the gold set.
The court asked the two parties to the dispute to attend the court, and all parties complied with that, and the bride handed over the gold of the network that was delivered to her at the time of the marriage contract, and the amount of the dowry was transferred to the groom through a bank transfer. The young man admitted before the court that he had received the gold and the dowry, and accordingly the newlyweds had been divorced.
Commenting on this incident, one of the female lawyers confirmed that this case is a precedent in the Kingdom.
Lawyer Nujoud Qassem said: “It used to be that the request for a divorce suit was made by the woman, not by the man.”
She noted that the court proved that the bride was procrastinating in completing the marriage and did not wish to do so, which inflicted financial losses on the groom, which called on the court to oblige her to return what the groom paid from the dowry and net.
