A Legacy Lives On: Markellos Chrysikopoulos’ Gift to Patron Honors Family Heritage

The works and personal archive of the acclaimed Patra visual artist and architect Stathis Chrysikopoulos undertakes to utilize the Patreon Municipality in order to make them the “estate” of all Patreon residents.

The important concession to the Municipality of Patreon was made by his son Markellos Chrysikopoulos, who donated the personal archive of the Artist for the Carnival of Patras and granted an indefinite loan of his visual work, which covers his entire artistic career. He also donated two works from the collection to be permanently exhibited in the new Town Hall of Patras.

Stathis Chrysikopoulos was a prominent figure in the artistic life of the city of Patras with international influence, a pioneer of the Carnival and for many years its Artistic Director and first President of the Carnival Organization.

During the signing of the Agreement, Markellos Chrysikopoulos stated that “he felt his duty to entrust his father’s work to the Municipality as it was known the love he had for Patras, the city that was a station and source of inspiration for his artistic creation”.

Markellos Chrysikopoulos described his need to entrust his father’s work to the Municipality as his debt.

For his part, Mayor Kostas Peletidis thanked Markellos Chrysikopoulos for his offer and emphasized: “Stathis Chrysikopoulos was an important artist who served and honored his city. We take the responsibility to make the best possible use of his work.”

The Deputy Mayor of Culture and in particular the Department of the Municipal Gallery will undertake the recording and documentation of the visual work with the aim of its conservation, study, promotion and presentation in a retrospective exhibition that will cover the entire artistic career of the Artist.

Accordingly, the personal archive of Stathis Chrysikopoulos will be recorded and utilized by the Municipality, while especially the carnival archive will be presented in the museum of the Patrinos Carnival which is being prepared in the Polychroi of the Old Slaughterhouses.

Present at the signing of the Agreement were the president of the Achaean Studies company and the I. and E. Topalis Foundation, Vangelis Politis, the Director of KEDIP – Patras Carnival Sofia Chrysopoulou and Nancy Pavlopoulou from the Press Office of the Municipality who coordinated the procedures for the preparation of the agreement.
