For many years, FC Barcelona were considered to need a replacement for Jordi Alba, while others protested that he was undervalued despite his flaws.
Most might agree that Alba would need some competition or at least a backup option to give the 33-year-old some rest during the season. It looks like Barcelona’s technical team have just withdrawn from the group who agree on the matter.
Not to miss
Following Alba’s improved form, Xavi and Mateu Alemany have been so pleased with his performances that they no longer see the left-back as an immediate need this summer. They had tried to attract one during the winter transfer window, but had failed to convince Ajax to part ways with Nicolas Tagliafico.
The ideal replacement in the eyes of former Valencia sporting director Alemany is current Valencia left-back Jose Gaya. According to Sport, Gaya would be in the best position to join Camp Nou, but only at the right price.
Gaya’s contract expires in 2023 and Valencia have made him a renewal offer. If he turns her down, Alemany would love to bring him to Barcelona for free in the summer of 2023. Otherwise, the Blaugrana are unlikely to shell out a significant sum for him.
Currently, Alejandro Balde is the club’s next natural left-back, although he mainly plays with the B team and is yet to earn Xavi’s trust. Sergino Dest has proven to be a good assistant at times, while Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza have replaced him at desperate times in the season.
