In London, a settled couple divorced following a lawyer clicked a “wrong button”.
According to a report yesterday, a couple was mistakenly divorced due to a mistake made by a lawyer at a London-based law firm.
Lawyers at the Verdiges Law Firm clicked the ‘wrong button’ on an online portal and filed a final divorce decree for Mr. and Mrs. Williams.
According to The Guardian, the lawyers intended to file for another client’s divorce, however, they accidentally lost the electronic case file in ‘Williams v Williams’ and the divorce was granted within 21 minutes of the petition.
He added that the judge ‘decided, effectively, but the computer says no, you’re divorced’.
Ayesha Wardig said that the state should not divorce people on the basis of fault. There must be intention on the part of the person giving divorce, as the principle of intention underpins the fairness of our legal system. When a mistake is brought to the court’s attention, and everyone accepts that a mistake has been made, it obviously has to be reversed’.
