Lawyer Claudia Van Der Stichelen specialized in divorce cases.
A person died on Saturday near a law office in the town of Hautem-Saint-Liévin, in the province of East Flanders. This is what Mayor Tim De Knyf told Belga, who affirms that it is the lawyer Claudia Van Der Stichelen. The police are still looking for the culprit.
The shootings occurred on Saturday afternoon around the Flammee – Van Der Stichelen law office. Another person was injured. She survived and was taken to hospital and is not in danger of death, the mayor said.
The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office was unable to provide further information on the precise conditions of the incident. “The investigation is continuing,” said the prosecution.
Claudia Van Der Stichelen specialized in divorce matters. She is also known as a surrogate mother’s lawyer in the high-profile case of baby Dmore than ten years ago.
Vulnerability of lawyers
The association of Flemish lawyers, Advocaat.be, reacted to the news with “fright”. In a statement, the organization expressed its condolences to the deceased’s husband and all his relatives. “If the investigation shows that Maître Van Der Stichelen was shot because she is a lawyer, it is particularly serious“, she adds.
“This shows that the legal profession has become dangerous and that lawyers are vulnerable targets.” The vulnerability of lawyers must be recognized, estimates the association. “Threats against lawyers must be taken seriously.
