Two American fans are suing Hollywood’s Universal Film Productions, saying they were deceived following they rented a film in which Ana de Armas did not appear, despite her appearance in the trailer promoting the film.
Conor Wolf and Peter Rosa say that each of them paid $3.99 to watch the comedy “Yesterday” (yesterday), only to discover that the actress’ scenes had been removed from the movie.
The two young men are seeking $5 million in compensation on behalf of all viewers affected.
Universal Pictures has not yet commented on the case.
Fans say they have been victims of deceptive marketing, and that Universal used the “fame and brilliance of De Armas” to promote a film in which they were not involved.
The complaint, filed in California on Friday, says, according to the Hollywood Reporter: “Although the defendant included scenes with Ms. De Armas in the trailer for the film, for the purposes of promoting the film Yesterday and attracting revenue from film sales and rentals, Ms. De Armas was not and did not It never appears in the shown version of the movie.”
The film revolves around a singer and songwriter who gets hit in the head and, following waking up from it, discovers that he is the only person on earth who remembers the Beatles.
Ana de Armas, who appeared in the latest Bond movie “No Time to Die”, was due to play a woman the singer admires in the film.
However, scenes from the 33-year-old actress were removed from the film, apparently because the producers believed the audience would not like this aspect of the story.
Richard Curtis, the screenwriter, said in 2019 that dropping the scenes for De Armas was a “very shocking” decision, because the actress was “brilliant” in the role.
